So, which day would you like to re-live over and over again this February? Following hot on the heals of St. Brigit with her spirit of learning, poetry, writing, creativity , craftsmanship and caring, perfect for the beginning of spring, (Feb 1st) comes Candlemass, (2nd Feb) known throughout much of the USA as Groundhog Day. Popularised throughout the rest of the world by the 1993 Comedy film starring Bill Murray and Andie MacDowell, set in small town Punxsutawney where the largest Groundhog festival takes place each year. If the Groundhog sees his shadow when he emerges from his burrow, there will be more winter, if not an early spring! Weatherman Phil Conners (Bill Murray) gets stuck in the same day (Groundhog Day) over and over again. Eventually he faces up to his real self, and the fact that he really isn’t that nice a guy. Faced with this self day after day, he sets about a remedy. By the end of the film he has come to realise the importance of things outside his world. He cas become a larger person. It (sadly) isn’t on this February 2nd, but keep a look out on the small screen, it’ll put in an appearance before spring is out I’m sure! We can’t re-live the same day much as we might wish to, perhaps a day’s perfect round of golf, or a wonderful holiday. A day spent with family without disagreement perhaps, or just an ordinary day when everything went to plan. However, we can start to plan for the future, and Candlemass, February, the first signs of spring is the perfect opportunity to start. I didn’t make any new years’ resolutions, but I will make a promise this February. Make a promise to yourself, write it somewhere, seal it in an envelope, then light a candle for your creativity and capacity in the light of Christ. Keep your promise safe until the sun sits long and high in the sky, then open it and remind yourself of spring and your optimism for yourself. We don’t need one day over and over for this, just the determination to make a difference. Focus on your true self and allow God to show your gifts to you in ways you might never have imagined. You might be surprised how much you can achieve.
